The Garden of My Dreams ...

As we dive deeper into August I look at my garden and despair.  Plants are sprawling, flopping, going over  - every year I say to myself that I must try harder; pure more effort in; make the garden work all year round; but I never seem to succeed. The garden always falls below expectation.  I don't want it to be perfect just pleasing to the eye - so I go in search of other gardens to see if they achieve what I have failed to do.  Well, the other day I found it - a garden I would give my right arm for.

It was bursting at the seams with plants and colour; so much so that you didn't know where to look - at every turn there was something to catch the eye - I can't remember when I  have found a garden so exciting.  The owners called it a Garden Library attached to a small nursery specialising in unusual perennials - it is a showcase for the nursery so you could see what the plants looked like when they  had grown to maturity.

It really did take your breath away - I came home full of ideas - it was inspirational.  I looked at my garden withy new eyes  and felt even more dissatisfied but it gave me heart to make changes.  Obviously it will never look as good as this because I don't have the space but I could make more of what I do have.

So - let the transformation commence.

Elaine

    1. Well of course it would be nice to have a stream running through it and perhaps a small woodland and a wild flower meadow ...

  2. I've never seen those long pink fluffy flowers near the end. My ideal garden is with lots of helpers.

    1. There were so many unusual plants that I had never heard of before - it was just so beautiful- but no I wouldn't want more helpers but as I get older and more infirm I may have to get some help - I just pray that day never comes

  4. Yes, that garden really is bursting at the seams! What a wonderful, sprawling array of different types of plants! It's a jungle of colour, texture and shapes! A Garden Library is a good name for this garden attached to the small nursery you visited.

  5. We are always our hardest critic, seeing every weed and out of place plant. The point is we try. In the spring anyway. I am over gardening now as we work our way toward Fall. There is always too much to do and plants do have a way of their own. And, there is always next year, I say. And of course, English gardens always are beautiful.

    1. Yes, we try. The garden in my minds eye never quite works out real life - but yes we just keep on trying.

  6. I sympathise as the plot tends to looks just as untidy at this time of year. I like that garden and would be happy if it was mine. xx

    1. Yes so would I - although because it is a garden of only perennials it must take a lot of work to keep it looking good.

  7. I can't wait to see what all you do. Please do before and after photos. I too have thought this very thing. What can I do to make my garden more colorful, look plentiful, more healthy???? The garden you have shown is outstanding. Good luck with your ideas.

  9. Oh that looks like a fabulous patch of earth Elaine. Where is it and does it open to the public regularly? I always feel discontent with my garden in August and have been working at getting more late colour and interest in without relying on annuals. Good luck with your transformation and be sure to keep us posted.

    1. That's exactly it Anna - trying to get all year round colour is very hard and I never quite achieve it but since I returned home to my own garden I have already been taking out plants that aren't worth the space they take up. It is a small nursery with a garden attached but it closes in September - its in Warwickshire - so not quite in your territory.

  10. A beautiful garden indeed! Given mine is being destroyed yet again, I too will have to go back to the drawing board. Floppy tall plants are always a problem, I constantly plan on supporting them, yet never get around to it....life gets in the way! So glad you are back and posting...xxx

    1. Oh - it was a beauty so many rare and unusual plants - it would cost a fortune to stock my garden with all the plants that I desired - hey ho!

  14. my dream garden would be big with trees and a stunning array of colours and textures. It would be more formal than your fave but only because that would calm my double vision and I love a good path. Plus I would have half a dozen or so volunteers look after it for me, haha

  17. Every spring, when the garden is fresh and bursting with promise, I say the same thing...but then the heat and humidity set in and I am loathe to even do the watering. I notice every single weed, shriveled bud and untrimmed branch. But when I step into my neighbor's garden to have a moan or a pleasant chat, suddenly, my garden looks lovely. A little distance makes all the difference.
